It's no secret that I am a newly-single mother to four beautiful children aged 5, 8, 10 and 12. My ex-husband would tell you that we split custody evenly, but the truth of the matter is that I parent the kids about 80% of the time. You see, I am a waitress and I work evenings. It works well for my family because i can spend the days taking care of the kids and their myriad of needs. I can pick the kids up from their dad's house in the morning, while he goes to work, and then return them to him at the end of the work day. See? Win-win.
My husband and I separated in September of 2007, from August 2008-March 2009 we attempted a reconciliation.
The kids and I moved back in with him and we gave it our best shot. We went to counseling, we went on romantic getaways, we spent hundreds of our talking, but in March he called it quits. The kids and i moved back out and resumed our previous custody arrangement - dad on the weekend, mom during the week.
This is the second year that the kids and I have planted an extensive vegetable garden. In march we attended the local "Seedy Saturday". We had spent hours mapping out the garden, planning what would go where, what we would plant again and what new veggies we would try this year. We purchased $70 worth of seeds including a few packs of sunflowers and nasturtiums.
There have been 30 shootings in Metro Vancouver since the beginning of the year resulting in 12 deaths and 16 injuries.
Each morning on our drive to school my children and I listen to a local radio station. At some point during our drive the news comes on which is, for the most part, a light look at news and sports on Vancouver Island. Since the new year each mornings news has been devoted to the previous days gang activity and violence in Vancouver.
