Summer Vacation, Somebody Save Me From my Kids
Jack, my eight year old son, had his final day of grade two the other day. His younger brother was looking forward to it, I was looking forward to it, summer was going to be loads of fun full of picnics, swimming, beach days and water fights in the back yard.
Day one of summer vacation dawned bright and sunny with a beautiful summer breeze wafting through the open bedroom window. Around 8 AM, Jack crawled into my bed, Kamden rolled in around 8:30 AM. Bliss. There was no need to rush through breakfast to get to school on time. What a great start to summer!
Sadly, it went severely south from there.
I had the audacity to insist that Kamden ask for more juice at breakfast nicely rather than in the grunt and pointing manner he was using. He is almost five, clearly, this was a very unreasonable request based on the tears and angry grunting that ensued. Flip flaping craptabulous, so far he’s been sent to his room, not once, but twice to cool off. And guess what, when he finally did end up back at the table ready to eat, his cereal was mushy. What do you know? (Trust me, I thought about making him eat it anyway but relented, mushy cereal is grosstasticaly disgusting)
Whew, with breakfast over, it was time to get ready for our picnic with Daddy downtown. While I was making lunch, Jack was playing one of the games he got for his birthday. When it was time to put it away he was struggling to put the game back into the plastic it was over packaged in (isn’t everything over packaged these days?). I tried to help, but low and behold, I couldn’t possibly do it right. Much frustration ensued. I suggested that perhaps the plastic was no longer needed since there seemed to be no way in God’s green earth it was going back into the box. Once again, Mommy is WAY out of line, will I ever learn?
More tears, some yelling, and another banishment to the bedroom to cool off.
It was only 9:20AM. Summer is going to be very, very, very long at this rate.
Today, on day two of summer vacation I am looking into some exciting day camps. Wait a minute, what’s this? Overnight camp? Sign me up!
