Junos in Vancouver -- Hallelujah
Today Vancouver hosts the 2009 Juno awards show.
There are street parties planned, all sorts of television and radio crews running around. Even the local gossip columnists and tweeters are in on the festivities.
Since hitting my mid-thirties having kids, my appetite for awards shows has waned somewhat. As, I hate to admit, my capacity to stock up on popular culture tidbits decreases, I find myself often demanding, “Who is she?”, “What movie was he in?” and “Who sings this song?”. Frankly, in a busy life, something has to give. (Let’s not talk about my ability to be fashionable either, since, as far as I know, Stacy and Clinton have yet to outline what ensemble goes well with sticky fingerprints and snotty nose wipes.)
Anyway, back to the Junos. We’re hosting and it should be a good party. A good party that is provided that the bars and venues don’t have to shut down at midnight, as per usual. (Another small tangent -- as this is obviously more a series of loosely related tangents than an actual blog post -- I’ve lived overseas in many different cities and countries, and this is the only place I’ve lived that is obsessed with shutting down entertainment venues by midnight. But that’s another post for another day.)
I’m going to be honest with you, I have no idea who’s up for awards this year. I have a feeling Sarah McLaughlin might still be milking her back catalogue and Nickelback has released a song that, even without hearing before, I can identify as Nickelback. I’m not saying if that’s a good or a bad thing, fight that out amongst yourselves in the comment section.
This video is one of my favourite Juno performances ever. Is there anyone more quintessentially Canadian that k.d. lang?
Do you have a favourite Juno moment or a favourite Canadian artist? Do tell. If you have a youtube link, even better.
