Enough Winter Already
I don’t know about you but I have had it with winter. It is March. The spring equinox is days away and it's -35. Are you freaking kidding me? Winter activities are a lovely concept but when it’s that cold for the duration of winter, that means sledding, snowmen and snow angels are out of the question. You know, on account of not wanting to lose limbs to frostbite. We have, however, been drinking more than our share of hot chocolate.
This year, winter has been endless and relentless in its fury. I could go on and on about how we, who live in Saskatchewan, have it worse than the rest of Canada but that isn’t true. The East Coast has had more than its fair share of freezing rain, Ontario has been in a deep freeze almost as much as the Prairies and B.C. has had record snow fall this year. Even Vancouver, which usually only gets rain, got snow at Christmas. Relentless winter, in any form, is still relentless winter.
Even my kids are starting to grumble about donning the latest in Eskimo fashion multiple times of day. We spend hours of our life just getting dressed warm enough to avoid the ever present threat of frostbite. Now don’t get me wrong, I really love where I live. It’s just a whole lot easier to love it during any other of the four seasons.
My boys are tired of playing Hotwheels and board games and play clay. They are ready to don their rubber boots and splash in a puddle or three. They are more than ready pull out their bikes and feel the wind in their hair and the warm sun on their faces. They are ready to be outside for more than the 3.2 seconds it takes to race from the house to the van. And I for one, seem to have sprouted several hundred new grey hairs from the sheer joy of been cooped up inside for months.
I know complaining about the weather is not very original but I think I speak for all Canadians when I say, winter? You can shut it.
